The basic division of carp reels includes models using only a front drag, as well as those that also have a baitrunner – a type of clutch used in the initial phase of a take when the fish moves off with the bait. In terms of preferences between these two options, carp anglers are divided, but in recent years, there has been an increased demand for models without baitrunner.

Both designs have their pros and cons. Baitrunner models are characterized by the convenience of quickly switching to proper drag operation with a single movement. On the other hand, models without baitrunner, due to their simpler design, are usually more durable, as the lack of additional components reduces the risk of failure.

Bearings in Carp Reels

It is believed that the number of bearings in a reel is synonymous with the quality of its operation. There is certainly a lot of truth in this, however, besides the number of bearings, their quality is also important! Models with fewer but high-quality bearings will work smoothly for much longer than bearings of dubious quality placed in a reel in even dozens of units.

Drag System in Carp Reels

The drag is one of the key parts of the reel, determining the force required to release the line from the spool during the fight. In carp fishing, the precision of the drag does not have to be as perfect as, for example, in spinning, but without a doubt, it affects the overall quality of use. In carp reels, we find models with a classic "long" drag, which requires several turns of the knob from full loose to complete spool lock, and models with so-called "Quick Drag," which in such a case requires only half a turn of the knob!

Another important element in carp reels is the strength of the drag, expressed in kilograms. The higher this value, the more resistance the reel can offer when fully locked, which we will use especially in difficult situations where we cannot give the carp even a centimeter of line.

Quality of Components in Carp Reels

The quality of components and the precision of construction determine how enjoyable and durable the reel will be. The simplest construction, which uses basic elements necessary for the operation of the reel but made precisely from high-quality materials will allow you to enjoy it much longer than a "technology-packed" model whose components are of low quality.

Housing of Carp Reels

The durability of the reel depends on its housing, as it is kind of a skeleton that keeps all components in the right place. Graphite is the most commonly used material for creating housing, but manufacturers are outdoing themselves in using newer, lighter, and more durable materials. The housing of a carp reel also affects its weight, as it is the largest part of it. While fishing with bait boats it doesn't matter whether the reel weighs 500 or 700g, for long-distance casting, a lightweight model is certainly another component necessary to achieve the longest casts. Generally, the lower the weight of the housing, the more convenient for the user, however, in some situations, this comes second.

Spool Capacity in Carp Reels

Carp reels are usually large models with spools that can hold hundreds of meters of thick line over 0.30mm. When choosing a carp reel, consider whether we really need a large "Big Pit" model because we fish at long distances with bait boats, or a smaller, more compact model is enough because our style of carp fishing does not require having a lot of line on the reel. Besides capacity, the shape of the spool is also important in some carp fishing methods. A long spool with a larger diameter releases the line better during long-distance casting, so for a distance caster, this is a very important aspect when choosing a reel. Speaking of spools, it's also worth checking if the reel we have chosen has the option to purchase a spare spool, as it comes in handy when we need to use a different diameter line or for example a braid.

Weight and Balance of Carp Reels

As we mentioned earlier, in most cases the weight of the reel does not have such a big impact on effective carp fishing. However, there are instances, for example, when casting long distances over 150m, when the lower weight of the reel affects speed, which is of great importance when sending the rig to such distances. As for the balance of the reel, there are models on the market that have also been refined in this respect and have a shifted center of gravity to its central part, but in the case of carp fishing, this is not such an important aspect, although it affects the comfort during casting or fighting the fish.

Handle in Carp Reels

The handle in a carp reel is, simply put, an intermediary element that allows winding the line onto the spool. In carp reels, an appropriate handle grip is important, thanks to which we can comfortably hold it during often long fights with carp from long distances. Most commonly, such a grip is made of rubber-coated plastic, but wooden grips are also very popular, adding aesthetics. The handle can be folded classically by unscrewing it, or through a quick-release button, which is a very convenient solution, allowing additionally to place rods very close to each other in the so-called English style. The handle is usually made of metal alloy, making it durable.
