Shrink Tubing and Hook Aligners
The effectiveness of a carp rig is incredibly important and can determine our success or failure. An appropriately constructed rig should properly "hook" the carp during a take - ideally in its lower lip, which is strong and fleshy. One of the elements that influence the effectiveness of the hooking is the hook aligner, which ensures that the hook point is correctly directed towards the fish’s lower lip.
Ready-made Aligners or Shrink Tubing?
Currently, there are two solutions on the market that allow the angler to position the hook during a take. The old-school, which is shrink tubing, and the ready-made hook aligners, which have been on the market for a significantly shorter period.
Shrink tubing - As the name suggests, it is a section of tubing that shrinks under the influence of sufficiently high temperature. Shrink tubing is available in several diameters to match the size of the hook and in many colors that facilitate matching the rig with the color of the bottom. Shrink tubing typically shrinks to 1/3 of its original diameter, ensuring a firm grip on the hook. Additionally, the tubing can be shaped by heat treatment to form a desired shape that influences the aggression and effectiveness of the hook.
Hook aligner - A ready-made solution that is significantly quicker to install than standard shrink tubing. You just need to slip it onto the eye and shank of the hook when mounting the rig. Therefore, more and more aligners with various shapes, lengths, or colors are appearing on the market.
