Free-Spool Carp Reels
Free-spool reel - A reel equipped with a free-spool system has become a classic in the realm of carp fishing, as it is most commonly associated with this type of angling, right next to the carp rod pod.
What is a free spool?
It works on the principle of a clutch, which allows us to quickly change the resistance that the reel's brake provides. By releasing the lever, which is usually located at the back of the reel, we are able to completely loosen its spool. After closing the lever, it switches the reel back to its original state with the currently set main brake resistance. Free spool is therefore an extremely convenient solution, as it prevents the loss of the rod during a fish's powerful take, and it only takes one turn of the handle to immediately switch to fighting the fish.
Free-spool reels have a more complex gear system than reels equipped with only a front drag. Therefore, it is worth choosing proven models from companies like Shimano, Sonik, PENN, or Okuma, which use top-class components, because there is nothing worse than a reel failure during the fight with the fish of a lifetime.
